Black Care 23 – The Proverbial Wisdom of Fostering Culture: The Holistic Nurturing of African and Caribbean Children ' with Dr Arlene Weekes
Celebrate Black History Month and Care Leavers week this October with the Black Care programme brought to you by Literati Arts in partnership with The Stephen Lawrence Research Centre, De Montfort University.
Black Care amplifies and celebrates the voices and stories of Britain’s Black Care Leavers.
Black Care aims to hold space for the experiences of Black people in the care system, to raise awareness and educate those in charge and help improve the experience of Black children in the care of the local authority today.
Dr Weekes will deliver what promises to be a keynote address with a difference.
The usual discussions about the care of African and Caribbean children in public care focus on love being enough. However, this historical and continued discourse fails to recognise the inherent lack of understanding of the perils of this notion on the long term wellbeing of the child and the adult they become.
This keynote aims to provide an opportunity for all those involved in finding homes for, who foster or have an interest in caring for children who are or are descendants of Africa and the Caribbean – offering an alternative perspective to the problem, and to share ideas for how to holistically nurture the African and Caribbean child.
