The number of students in HE with a known disability is increasing (Hubble & Bolton, 2020. Support for Disabled Students in HE). Support is provided for disabled students by higher education providers (HEPs) through reasonable adjustments, disability services and by the
Government through Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs).
This online workshop explores how staff can work more effectively, with DMU students in ways that are consistent, professional & supportive.
We shall explore the wide range of resources, support and guidance in existence to help you navigate student interactions and positively impact on the student experience.
Workshops aim to develop your confidence to refer to resources alongside an understanding about the limits of provision at the university and where external sources of support are required.
We ask that staff who sign up to attend are able to commit to the full session timings. Staff who leave the session more than 10 minutes before the end of the session will not be accredited for attending.
Aims & Objectives
- To have identified conditions that are legally defined as disabilities under the Equality Act 2010.
- To have explored the differences between the social and medical model of disability and how this can inform your practice.
- To develop confidence in relation to language and terminology and to relate this to challenging stigma and encouraging student disclosure.
- To be aware of support and signposting to support the disabled student journey, from transition to employment.
