Faculty Research


Research in the Faculty of Art + Design is rich and diverse, spanning a wide range of creative disciplines and methodologies, with significant contributions made to our cultural and economic life. Art + Design has a strong record in research activity, evidenced by its rating of 4 at the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

The Faculty's research specialisms fall into four main areas:

Design and New Product Development
Research extends from sustainable technology and design to developments in holography, to the production of tableware in ceramics and digital manufacturing; from spatial design to the history and theory of design.

Fine Art Practices
Practices covers research in all fields of fine art activity and has resulted in a number of important grants and awards.

Photographic Studies and Creative Imaging
Research includes the study of, and practice in, photography together with holographic and lenticular imaging.

Textile Engineering And Materials (TEAM)
TEAM has an excellent record of externally funded research projects and knowledge transfer partnerships that reflect the diversity of the textile industry and related research fields including technical textiles, sustainable technologies, natural fibres and material performance.
