Vijay Patel building

DMU’s new Vijay Patel building brings all our art and design courses together into a beautiful, striking building filled with light. It provides the space and facilities where student and staff ideas can develop and flourish.

Our extensive workshops are designed to support both traditional and contemporary practice. Studios and hub spaces have been created to encourage the collaboration of ideas, so our students can craft and mould their ideas and share their creativity with others.

See for yourself

Come and see the building for yourself, at our Open Day on Saturday 1 July 2017 and find out more about our undergraduate art and design courses at DMU.

If you can't attend one of our Open Days, we offer campus tours throughout the year. Our current students host the tours and cover all key facilities on campus as well as giving you the chance to ask questions about student life at DMU.

Product Design student Karina looking over Leicester from the terrace of the Vijay Patel Building at DMU

Karina Basurto-Jiminez - Product Design BA (Hons)

As an International student from Mexico, I feel very welcome at DMU and travelling to another country to study has helped to develop my creativity and independence. The atmosphere inside the Vijay Patel Building inspires me and I have enjoyed working collaboratively with students on other courses within our shared studio spaces. I have had the amazing opportunity to join the DMU Racing Team and I know that my experience at DMU will be unforgettable.

Seehab Ahmed - Architecture BA (Hons)

The Vijay Patel Building allows for a fluid transition between design and the process of model making with the workshops and studio spaces being so closely linked. Being at DMU has allowed me to build a professional network and get involved in societies, and I am currently the Chairman of the Leicester School of Architecture Society, which has enabled me to work on projects with RIBA as the Regional Student Representative. #DMUglobal trips have been a highlight, from experiencing a different culture in Barcelona last year to having the opportunity to go to New York this year to further enhance my studies.

Elissa Grainger - Contour Fashion BA (Hons)

The study facilities at DMU have a great atmosphere and the open plan studio spaces mean that students from different years can work together in the same environment, helping everyone to learn from each other. A highlight of studying at DMU is the range of facilities that are available to the students. I was able to experiment in the metal, plastics and printing workshops, which helped to develop my final collection, and has led to me winning the ASOS Fashion Discovery Competition and £50,000 prize for my trademark latex lace designs which were coined at DMU.

Marcus Dove - Fine Art BA (Hons)

I have had many great opportunities while studying at DMU including creating a commissioned piece of work when Baroness Doreen Lawrence was appointed as our new Chancellor, and more recently when I was able to take part in the paint scene within the new TV advert. My art is very expressive of who I am as a person. People get my sense of attitude when they see the finished pieces, and DMU has allowed me to experiment with different mediums within fantastic facilities.
