Law degrees have added value to DMU graduate's career

A De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) law graduate says her role as a trainee VAT consultant is everything she hoped for - and more.

Mamta Dave credits DMU, where she studied for a Master's in International Business Law after gaining a First in her law degree, with helping her realise her career ambition.

She started her role with Constable VAT Consultancy - one of the largest independent VAT specialist consultancies in the UK - in April last year and couldn't be happier.

Mamta said: "I was over the moon when I found out I had landed the job.

"It is the career I have striven for and I feel DMU prepared me exceptionally well.

"My role is everything I hoped it would be - and more."

Mamta is based in Dedham Vale, Constable Country, which adds to the appeal.

She said: "I spend a large chunk of my time reading and summarising tax cases for our newsletter. VAT judgements are extremely challenging to understand, however this is what I enjoy.

"I have also been involved in drafting representations on behalf of clients, quoting case law precedents to support and distinguish the facts."

Mamta's company is sponsoring her through the Chartered Tax Adviser qualification, which will enable her to progress her career as a VAT consultant.

She decided this is the path she wanted to take part-way through her undergraduate degree.

Mamta said: "I secured a part-time administration position with a VAT consultancy. I discovered this was a very complex area with vast amounts of case law. Judgements by the Court of Justice of the European Union play a large role in the implementation of tax law in the UK and this is what drew me to the role."

After originally choosing to study law at DMU because of the vibrant, friendly atmosphere, state-of-the-art facilities and her interest in the legal system, Mamta picked her Master's course as she wanted to specialise in tax law.

She said: "After graduating in 2013, the firm sponsored me through my Master's.

"My favourite part of the course was the classroom debates. This helped to strengthen my advocacy skills and taught me how to put forward a convincing argument.

"I particularly enjoyed the modules that offered a deeper understanding of the various international rules and conventions applicable to international contracts.

"The staff were extremely knowledgeable, helpful, supportive and always available to talk through any issues I had.

"Life on campus was fun, interesting and exciting. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at DMU."
