This year’s programme of events, exhibitions and performances to showcase the exciting talent of the next generation of artists and designers across DMU’s architecture, art, design, fashion and performing arts undergraduate courses kicked off at the weekend with the launch of the Art & Design Foundation Show (8-14 May).

Experts, employers and representatives from the creative industries joined others with a passion for creativity to take in work presented by students completing their BTEC Diplomas at DMU. The BTEC course prepares students to go on to specialist art and design courses, including degrees and teacher training.

Artist David Shrigley, who was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1987, completed the DMU BTEC course before moving on to Glasgow School of Art.

Winner of the Jo Moore Memorial Award, presented in memory of a former student, was Sally Kingsnorth. The Christopherson Award went to Oliver Hay and Jamie Schwartz. Courtney Askey was chosen to be part of this year's Summer Art Trail in Leicester.

"It's an amazing environment," said Courtney, who is also staying on to do a Fine Art degree. "The people you are working with are so creative and so talented, it spurs you on and we all support each other."

Ram Ghai created several sculptures which he has imagined as public spaces such as parks and offices. He said: "It's based on Anish Kapoor's Orbit.
