Is this the brainiest house in Leicester?

While De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) continues to establish itself as a centre of academic excellence, there’s a student house in the city that runs it pretty close.

Number 161 Barclay Street is a pleasant looking property in Leicester’s West End but doesn’t give any obvious clues to the extraordinary achievements of those who live there.

Yet the DMU Class of 2015 was boosted by the fact the six students living at the address during their final year have all graduated with First Class Honours – maybe the campaign for a blue plaque starts here!

The astonishing feat came to light as four of the residents celebrated outside Leicester’s Curve theatre following their part in Thursday’s School of Design graduation ceremony. When Eleanor Kerr, Nia Davies, Clara Mooring and Emma Fawcett were interviewed by the DMU Communications team, they explained they all lived at 161 Barclay Street and had all gained a First in Fashion Buying and Marketing.

They then pointed out that two other housemates – Hannah Marshall (also Fashion Buying and Marketing) and Emma Gristwood (Business and Marketing) – had also gained Firsts. So students moving into No 161 next year can either take their move into new accommodation as a good omen or one heck of a lot to live up to – either way, no pressure!

Emma Fawcett, from London, who will be working as part of the M&S Buying team come September, very much enjoyed living at the house, saying: “It was nicely furnished and all the housemates were really supportive, helping each other with our course work.”

Eleanor, from York, will be joining the Tesco graduate scheme, in September, as a Trainee Buyer: “I chose DMU for its strong industry links, a new and exciting course in Fashion Buying, plus the quality of its facilities and its teaching,” said Eleanor.

“I liked the university’s multi-cultural, global outlook and the chance to experience a work placement was key for me.”

Blue plaque or not, it certainly was a case of ‘six of the best’ this year for 161 Barclay Street. Watch this space.
