DMU student begins fashion buying career before graduation

A third year student at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) secured the graduate position of her dreams in fashion buying, after a conversation with a retail CEO.

Honeysha Mistry was offered a role in the buying department at Dunelm before graduating from her Fashion Buying BA (Hons) degree.

The third year student secured the job through a graduate scheme, a work placement during her studies and networking with buyers and the CEO.

Honeysha said: “I did work experience at Dunelm and it was really interesting and fast-paced so I knew that I wanted to work there.

“My degree really helped me, especially with things like trend predictions, and it’s such a relief to have a job lined up when I haven’t even got my grades yet.”

“I work at Starbucks and I got talking to the CEO who gave me his card and suggested I apply for the graduate scheme.”

The fashion buying student completed work experience placements at George at Asda and Dunelm during the course, which helped shape her decision to move in to homeware buying.

She will start work full-time for the home furnishing retailer this month as a buying assistant at the company’s head office.

Honeysha developed skills as part of her degree course which can be used in fashion buying roles for clothing or homeware brands.

She returned to campus this week to showcase her final year project – a childrenswear collection for the Autumn/Winter season.

The girlswear range was inspired and modelled by Honeysha’s three-year-old daughter, with focus on colour choices, designs, pricing, target audience and a marketing strategy for the collection.

Dunelm started as a Leicester market stall 30 years ago and has grown to be the market-leader in the UK homewares market with more than 140 stores across the country.
