Humanities Applicant Taster Day activities - 14 March

An Applicant Taster Day is an unmissable opportunity to get hands-on with your chosen course. Tailored for DMU applicants and the course you've applied for, we'll be holding demonstrations, exercises and activities that give you a flavour of what you'll experience when studying here at DMU. Some sessions are subject to availability and have limited spaces, so we recommend booking early.

Below is a list of the activities running on the day for Humanities courses. Take a look at what's going on for the course you've applied for, then book your place on the form underneath.

  1. Creative Writing

    Creative Writing Experience
This is a practical session that will give you a taste of Creative Writing workshops. We will guide you through exercises using prompts to spark short pieces of writing.

  2. English Language

Child Language Acquisition: First Steps Towards Language
In this session, we consider how babies learn language. We look at some of the characteristics of child language, from babbling to first words to grammar, and also consider whether how parents talk to babies might help them take their first steps towards knowing and using a language.

  3. English Literature

    Introduction to Poetry
This taster session introduces you to how to read poetry at university. The session will focus on engaging creatively with a poem by Billy Collins. Bring your ideas and your enthusiasm!

  4. History

Anti-German Riots in London during the First World War
Using pictorial, web, newspaper and written sources, our session will examine the situation of the German community which lived in Britain during the First World War by focussing upon the riots which members of this group faced. We will ask what this story tells us about Britain and minority populations during wartime.
