Interview advice
You've been invited to an interview – congratulations!
It's a chance for us to learn more about your motivation, experience, skills and potential, and for you to ask questions about your course and life at DMU.
Feeling nervous is completely normal. You don't need to have the 'perfect' answer. These guides and tips will help you prepare and know what to expect.
1. Find your course interview guide
Start with the guide for your course. It explains why interviews take place, what to expect, how to prepare and what happens afterwards.
2. Prepare for your interview
A few practical steps can help you feel ready. Check your course guide for any additional preparation you need to complete.
- Accept your Teams invitation
We'll email you a Microsoft Teams invitation before your interview. Accept it and make a note of the date and time.
- Check your technology
Get familiar with Microsoft Teams, test your microphone and camera, and make sure your device is charged or plugged in.
- Choose a quiet space
Find somewhere you can take part in the interview without distractions.
- Revisit your application
Read your personal statement and think about how you could expand on what you've written.
- Research your course
Read the course page and think about why you want to study the subject.
- Practise speaking about yourself
Try a practice interview, ideally with a teacher or careers adviser. Someone outside your close friends or family can offer a fresh perspective.
3. On the day
Remember, you've been invited because your application has already shown potential.
Before you join
- Give yourself time to get set up and join your Microsoft Teams interview.
- Dress smartly and professionally.
- Make sure your device is powered and your surroundings are suitable.
During your interview
- Listen carefully and take a moment to think before answering.
- Try to give more than yes or no answers.
- If you don't understand a question, politely ask for clarification.
- Show your enthusiasm for the subject and be yourself.
4. Need help with your interview?
Running late?
Email applicantevents@dmu.ac.uk as soon as you can. If you're going to be significantly late, we may be able to offer another date, but this isn't always possible due to limited availability.
