Zachary Duncan-Johal - case study

How did the staff support you on this course?

My tutors were helpful. They made me see all the strengths in my work and helped me to question myself to make sure I was developing my ideas as far as possible, which led me to some very interesting results that I wouldn't have come to without their input. The tutors were also very good at helping me to think about contextual references which were very helpful at times when I was unable to think of a good connection that was relevant to my project. I am thankful for many things that my tutors have done but above everything else, I am appreciative for them helping to unlock my creative ability.

Which module did you enjoy the most?

The module that I enjoyed most was the Construction and Deconstruction project during the pathway stage because this was the first full project where I had chosen my specialism and was in my element for the first time. I think this was also the module that taught me the most; certainly a lot of what was learnt during this module was applied to my final major project.

What has been your favourite experience at DMU?

I went to Venice in November as part of the course and have fond memories of the Venice Biennale (56th International Art Exhibition). When I was in Venice I tried to embrace the culture as much as possible especially when it came to cuisine which was great! I used this experience to the fullest when I got back to the studio using exhibits that had inspired me to influence my work. I think that the course has prepared me very well for next year because my creative skills have been honed. The course has been everything I was hoping and a little bit more.

What influenced you to study at DMU?

I liked the fact that Leicester is a very diverse city and thought that this would be beneficial when it comes to working in teams. I also liked how connected Leicester is as a city because in little time you can get to a lot of big cities including London very easily which I think is very handy. Finally, I liked the fact that DMU is investing a lot of money specifically into the Art, Design and Humanities subject areas because it means that I will have new state-of-the-art facilities available for next year when I go on to study further.

Zachary is progressing on to the Architecture BA (Hons) degree at DMU.
