Spotlight on: Fashion Buying
Fashion Buying at DMU was created to meet the needs of the highly dynamic, fast-moving and exciting sector of fashion retail buying and merchandising.
The course allows you to take one of two pathways; Design or Marketing. The Design pathway focuses more on product design, range planning and trends, whereas the Marketing pathway focuses on product development, consumer behaviour, marketing and promotion.
Both pathways develop buying skills, and knowledge of the buying cycle, sourcing and garment technology.
Covering specialist areas of fashion buying across womenswear, childrenswear and menswear, you will have the opportunity to meet buying experts and work on live projects with industry. Previous students have gained placements in Reiss, Boden, Arcadia, Swetty Betty, Speedo, Bhs, George and Next.
Graduate careers
Fashion Buying is designed to cater for those looking to enter fashion buying careers. Options also include fashion merchandising, garment technology, working for fashion suppliers and also retail fashion management.
Case Study: Liam Rennock
Liam Rennock graduated with a 1st class honours degree in July 2011. As a result of impressing key personnel at Next with his entry for a Trends Board competition, he was invited to apply for a position within the organisation.
Following a very successful presentation and interview at the Next Assessment Centre Liam was fortunate enough to be offered the position of Trainee Buyer on Men’s jerseywear.
Skills in business, design, marketing, CAD, presentation, and garment construction developed as part of his study on the Buying course, provided him with the perfect platform from which to launch into a creative business role within the fashion industry.
