Winter Grads 2020: Star scholars collect awards


Meet the high fliers who have not only finally graduated from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) but came top of the class to boot.

Awards were handed out to high-flying graduates from the Faculty of Business and Law by their lecturers and representatives of companies who sponsor the annual awards during DMU’s winter graduations.

Many had combined full-time jobs with studying for postgraduate qualifications to enhance their current careers or as part of moves to work in different sectors.
Among them was Jennifer Walker, who won a prize for Strategic and Digital Marketing. She said: “I was offered a job by the company I did a placement with while I was an undergraduate. I had lectures twice a week and then study on top of that, it was tough but it has helped me in my career.”

Alice Hack’s employer, RR Accountancy in Melton Mowbray, allowed her to study for her Master’s in Applied Accounting while working. She said: “I was so lucky to be able to work and study, and hopefully they are proud. It’s definitely helped me in my job because it has given me a better understanding of my practice.”

Emma Illman, who studied the Business of Motorsport, has since landed a job with for a PR agency MPA Creative, that handles the British Touring Car Championships. She said: “I am loving it. I’m working on a campaign at the moment to get more women into sport. This course helped me so much.”

Jasmine Bolton is now working in a PR agency in Portsmouth as an account executive where’s she is nicknamed ‘the content queen’ by colleagues because she keeps coming up with great ideas.

Farhana Mogra who was a legal assistant at Freeths in Nottingham while studying, was awarded a prize for her work in the commercial law elective on the Legal Practice Course. She said: “During my undergraduate year I realised how much I loved commercial law, and that feeling continued on my LPC here but I was still surprised to get top marks.”

Bethany Boothby, of Wilkin Chapman, said: “I think the best part of the experience was making friends. We had a good group and we were all combining work with study, so we could understand what we were all going through.”

Vaughan Hal, emcee of the De Montfort Law School Awards, said: “It’s really important that we recognise as a law school the gold standard that this cohort has achieved we are very proud of everyone, and we wish them best for the future.”

Among the guests was Glynis Wright, who is chair of Leicestershire Law Society. She said: “I’m delighted to be able to be here to meet so many talented young people. I’m especially pleased to have been able to present an award to Zara, who has just joined my firm as a trainee solicitor.”
