A mini film festival curated by De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) students opens this weekend featuring cult classics, Hollywood blockbusters and world cinema.
Are We Nearly There Yet? Runs from tomorrow (Saturday March 23) to Saturday March 30, with films being shown at Leicester’s Phoenix Cinema, Upstairs at the Western pub and The Green Place in Sileby.
The title – taken from the classic cry from children in the back of the car on long journeys – plays on the theme of journeys by exploring road moves, pilgrimages and journeys of the soul.
Second year Film Studies undergraduates have put together the programme. It is thought to be the only film studies programme in the UK that gives its students the opportunity to organise their own film festival.
The festival opens tomorrow night with a screening of Thelma and Louise at 8pm, with the Phoenix being decorated for the occasion, themed cocktails and even some fancy dress. There will be special themed events around each screening, each influenced by the particular film.
Adam Harcourt is one of the team of students who have helped put the festival together. He said: “We tried to get a range of films that would appeal to a cross section of people so there’s family films, double bills, more adult films like Nightcrawler and there’s also a film quiz. I hope people come and see the films and they enjoy what we’ve done.”

Cassie Brummitt, Education Assistant at the Phoenix and lecturer Laraine Porter have worked with the students on this year’s festival.
Cassie said: “It’s been fantastic working with the second-year Film Studies students as they’ve taken on the immense responsibility of running their own film festival, from start to finish.
“This is our biggest festival to date – running over a full week and packed with events, not only at Phoenix but around Leicestershire too, with our partners Upstairs at the Western and The Green Place, Sileby.”
