Fashion grad who baked for friends at DMU named as Great British Bake Off contestant

A fashion graduate named among this year’s Great British Bake Off contestants said she honed her skills making cakes for friends while at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

Amelia Le Bruin has been selected as one of the contestants for this year’s edition of the hit Channel 4 show, which pits amateur bakers against each other to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

The Contour Fashion graduate – who now works as a sportswear designer at United Fashion – said she was still waiting for things to sink in after being unveiled as one of the 13 new hopefuls.

She said: “I have wanted to get into the tent since series one. It’s still not sunk in, but it’s a dream come true.”

Amelia, originally from Halifax, Yorkshire, said she had been baking for 19 years, starting as a child, after watching her mum and grandma creating cake decorations.

She honed her baking skills while at DMU, making cakes and treats for friends and fundraising events.

“I am really excited to tell my godson who is six that I am on Bake Off,” she said.

“That will be the best thing ever.  I can’t wait to tell him as he means the world to me, I am bursting to tell him.”

The new series of Great British Bake Off – the third to be shown on Channel 4 since it switched from BBC One – will start on Tuesday 27 August.

The presenters and judges remain the same, with Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig back for another year of puns.

Amelia said her baking cake of choice was a Red Velvet.

“I would like tropical fruit on it, tequila based liquor in the sponge,” she said.

“I think I would want it fresh and fruity with some edible glitter to represent a sunny summery day.”
