Working to briefs set by visiting industry experts helped give two students the employability edge as they landed jobs before graduating.
The valuable real-world experience on their courses is delivered by De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)’s Faculty of Business and Law, which has close relationships with companies to help ensure learning is relevant to industry.
Eleanor Davison (Advertising and Marketing Communications) and Simon Griffiths (Business and Marketing) both praised the level of support they received from academics and advisors at DMU.
They also fully embraced university life, joining sports societies, and signing up for #DMUglobal the university’s overseas experience programme.
Eleanor and Simon were among 800 students who were part of a #DMUglobal visit to Berlin, one of the largest European trips ever carried out by a UK university. Students all had their own itineraries, making visits to businesses, organisations, museums and landmarks which were designed to enrich their studies.
Eleanor, 22, was also captain and chairwoman of DMU’s Lacrosse Society while Simon played for DMU Basketball – and was part of the university’s Varsity-winning side.
Eleanor has now landed a communications job at Leeds Building Society while Simon is a digital marketing executive at Leicester firm Shoezone.
“I've enjoyed so many aspects at DMU, it's hard to think of a favourite,” said Simon, originally from Uttoxeter. “I feel over the moon that I was able to secure a job before graduation and in my favourite city, Leicester.”

Eleanor said the element she enjoyed most on her course was working with client projects briefed into them at the university, adding: “All the work is contemporary and industry relevant. The placement team were very useful, not only for obtaining my placement and during it, but also for advice and a chat about postgrad life.”
Simon completed a year at HeadRed, a digital marketing agency in Coventry and praised the help and support he gained from DMU’s lecturers and the faculty’s employability team, which is part of the university’s #DMUworks programme, which helps students to find work.
He said: “I have received so much career advice and wisdom over the last 4 years, from the employability team and lecturers. I have had help with preparing for interviews for my placement year and CV writing for final year. Thank you, DMU!”
