Master's students prepare to get creative in wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen

From the 19th century fairy tales penned by Hans Christian Andersen to the uber cool 21st Century creative hub of Kodbyen, Copenhagen has always been known as a city full of imagination.

Now dozens of postgraduate students from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) are about to embark on a #DMUglobal trip to the Danish capital under the banner of ‘Creative Copenhagen’.

Hundreds of postgraduate students have taken part in #DMUglobal trips this academic year offering them unbeatable experiences to enhance their studies. A total of 15 postgraduate trips have been organised in 2017/18 so far with close to 300 master’s students taking part.

Around 30 will be travelling to Copenhagen on Wednesday 18 April with the majority studying at the Leicester Castle Business School, for subjects including MSc Business Management in Creative Industries and the MSc in Creative Enterprise.

Megan Cliffe, who is studying an MA in Business Management in the Creative Industries and has previously been to New York with #DMUglobal, said: “I have never been to Copenhagen before so I am really excited. I’m looking forward to teaming up with students from universities in Copenhagen so we can learn directly from them.

“I want to work in theatre which is an international industry so getting to learn how creative businesses are run in different countries is invaluable.”

Bo Zhang, from China, is also studying Business Management in the Creative Industries and this will be his first trip to mainland Europe.

He said: “We will be visiting Copenhagen Business School and that offers the chance to speak to other business students. It is good for my course to get to see how business is done elsewhere.”

Pawel Sternik is a third year undergraduate studying Arts and Festivals Management and is joining the trip after submitting an account of how it will benefit him academically.

He said: “I think it is so important to travel and experience different cultures. I have spoken to people at other universities and they offer nothing like #DMUglobal.

“I would encourage all students to apply for a #DMUglobal trip. It is an amazing opportunity to enhance your skills.”

Dr Rachel Granger, reader at Leicester Castle Business School and Director of the Creative and Cultural Industries Group, said the Copenhagen trip will also leave a legacy of new ways of learning.

She explained: “The trip will actually involve more than 60 people. We will be taking some Leicester-based practitioners with us who will meet us at the airport and join us on the study tour, and there will be 10 to 15 Danish students and practitioners joining us too, to create a genuine 'Live Learning Lab' of mixed skills and disciplines, different ages and cultures, and different levels of competency.

“We see this as DMU's role in pushing forward new roles of learning and new roles of Higher Education - in essence bringing together students and practitioners to co-learn.

“When we return to Leicester, the trip sets the backdrop to an annual colloquium on creative industries in the city, which brings together researchers and practitioners to solve pressing issues facing cities like Leicester. The aim is very much about DMU taking on a more strategic role in the city in bringing together relevant parties to drive new thinking, which other cities then aspire to.”

While in Copenhagen the postgrad group will be able to take part in four strands of activity for the week.

These are:

  • Creative Enterprise – this includes spending time with Copenhagen Business School at DMU partner university Niels Brock, and the ‘future living’ lab of Ikea-funded Space 10.
  • Fashion and Design – incorporating trips to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the associated CODE, which promotes the bringing together of multiple disciplines to solve complex issues in the creative industry, as well as a visit to the Design Museum
  • Digital Media and Creative Technologies – includes visits to the Copenhagen School of Design and Technology and visiting the district of Kodbyen which has used the creative industries to regenerate the old meat-packing district
  • Culture – including meetings with the organisers of the famous Roskilde Music Festival and Art Rebels, community and network for creatives; artists, musicians, designers, film makers, cultural activists and event makers.
