DMU takes early Varsity wins but comes away with work to do after first day's action

A dramatic penalty shootout and an 8-0 comeback gave #TeamDMU memorable victories on the opening day of Varsity 2018.

But the final scoreboard showed the work DMU sides have to do, finishing the day 3-11 to rivals University of Leicester on overall points.

DMU’s Women’s 1st Tennis team got the contest started with a tense affair at the Knighton Tennis Centre. Following some hard fought contests, they fought back from 3-1 down to level at 3-3 and force a tie-break, before being eventually edged out 4-3.

Meanwhile, our Men’s 1st Tennis team also fought a tight affair. The score finished 3-3 with a decider to be played to see who picks up the point.

Next up, several football fixtures got underway at Stoughton Road and Beaumont Park with the Women’s 2nd team taking to the field and four DMU men’s teams going into battle.

The women’s 2nd and Men’s 5th teams lost narrow affairs 1-0 but the men’s 3rd team almost pulled off a famous comeback, closing a 3-0 deficit to a more reflective 3-2 loss.

There was more drama in the Men’s 4th team, who scored a late equaliser in extra time before winning a dramatic penalty shootout. Men’s 5th football carried on the winning run by beating University of Leicester counterparts 1-0 at Beaumont Park.

Comeback of the day, though, took place at Stoughton Road where DMU Men’s 3rd Rugby side reversed an 8-0 deficit to win 13-14.  Captain Charlie Dunn was ecstatic afterwards.

He said: “It’s amazing. The first win since 2009. The first captain to win since 2009. There’s no feeling like it really. I’m speechless. The boys did me absolutely proud.”

Away from Varsity, DMU Squash team won the BUCS Midlands Conference Cup, which will give #TeamDMU a lift going into day two’s fixtures.

As we mount a comeback for the ages, you can catch all of the Varsity action on our social media channels (using #TeamDMU and #DaretoWin) and our Varsity webpage. See how we get on at our DMU Men's and Women's Futsal fixtures on Friday evening where will be looking to scoop all three points!

To paraphrase Winston Churchill: “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in Leicester, we shall fight on the courts and fields, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our university, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the mats, we shall fight on the grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the arenas, we shall fight in the pools; we shall never surrender."

Come on Team DMU. We can do it!
