It was a night of comebacks for the men’s volleyball and women’s football teams at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) after dramatically securing wins and vital points in the annual Varsity competition.

DMU Dragons men celebrate their dramatic 3-2 volleyball win

The DMU Dragons men’s volleyball team went two sets down during their match against the University of Leicester (UoL) at the Leicester Arena.

It meant UoL needed to win just one more set to take the crown and the Varsity point, but a never-say-die attitude from the DMU men saw them win the next three sets to take the honours with a 3-2 victory.

Meanwhile, at DMU’s Beaumont Park the DMU women’s football team fought back from 2-0 down to force the draw and take the game to penalties. They kept their heads and won the shootout convincingly 4-2.

There was also a resounding 3-1 win for the DMU Dragons women’s team in the volleyball.

Women's volleyball were 3-1 winners

The other matches from last night didn’t go DMU’s way.

Men’s football first X1 were narrowly beaten 2-1 in their match at Beaumont Park  which was played in torrential rain. Luckily DMU’s excellent facilities at Beaumont Park meant the men’s and women’s games could go ahead after moving the fixtures off grass and on to the floodlit 3G pitch.

Sadly there was no cheering to be had at the end of the hockey wither with both the men and women first teams losing their games.

Varsity continues tonight with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd netball teams playing at Leicester Arena, home of DMU partners Leicester Riders basketball team, and the men’s badminton 2nds compete at the Danielle Brown Sports Centre.
