Together #TeamDMU: Student sports stars react to launch of new kit

Sports clubs at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) will stand as one this season after a slick new #TeamDMU kit was officially launched today.

The new kit creates a one brand identity for sport at DMU for the very first time, further enhancing the professional approach to sport developed over the past two seasons.

Today the ‘Together #TeamDMU’ teaser campaign which has ran for the past week came to an end and students got their first glimpse of the smart new match and leisure wear clubs will compete in this season.

DMU Sport has signed a partnership with sportswear brand Surridge to supply the kit, joining other universities such as Brunel, Coventry and Essex to adopt the one brand approach to sport with the supplier.

DMU Head of Sport, Fiona Dick said: “DMU Sport now has a single supplier for sports clothing.

“Having a uniformed appearance allows our students to enhance the DMU Sport brand.

“This allows us to instil a professional approach throughout the students clubs, and create a sense of collegiality and unifying bond through all sports at DMU.”

The new British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) season will begin on Wednesday 11 October and the new kit will be worn for the first time.

Each club kit is unique in its design, but is red and black, featuring a white stripe and trimming, incorporating the red DMU dragon across the lower torso.

Surridge are also supplying black leisurewear for clubs with red trimming, allowing clubs to dress professionally for training and when travelling to match days.

Derrick Mensah, Vice President Student Activities at De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU), said: “I’m confident that the new kit will give our sports clubs a real sense of pride in representing their university on the pitch, court or mat- or wherever they do their thing.

“Wearing the same kit shows that, together, we’re all working towards the same goal; something greater the sum of our parts.

“I’m really looking forward to what should be the best year yet for our sports clubs.”

Cressentia.I.Masuku, a 2nd year Fashion Design BA (Hons) student and DMU basketballer, said: “I think the new kit is great considering last year; sports teams had different coloured kits which didn’t look as professional as the new kit does.

“The new kit will help promote DMU’s image of being one and united together with similar kits in terms of design and colour.”

“It will good to have all the sports teams looking and feeling the part.”

Vice-Chancellors Sports Scholar and second year Medical Science BSc (Hons) student Henry Clement, who plays for the DMU Rugby 1st XV, said: “I thought the kit looked very smart and neat. I know the squad will look forward to getting their first run out in it.
