Some of the country’s leading cyber security experts from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) are sharing valuable tips on staying safe online through a series of free events.

Local people and businesses will be supported across a broad range of subjects, including protecting yourself against scams (phishing), safeguarding your children online and protecting your online privacy on social networking platforms such as Facebook.

Last month, intelligence company C6 published the top 20 British postcodes where stolen identities are for sale on the hidden internet, with Leicester making up a fifth of the list and featuring in the top three spots.

According to C6, which monitors encrypted online stores trading in stolen identities, cyber fraudsters are collecting information by piecing together hacked accounts and social media.

Presented by experts from DMU’s Cyber Technology Institute (CTI), the monthly #DMUCyberWednesdays series starts on 13 September with a talk about keeping your data safe online.

It will be delivered by Professor Helge Janicke, the Director of the CTI and Head of DMU’s School of Computer Science and Informatics, who said: “The aim of #DMUCyberWednesdays is to offer free support and advice to local people and businesses about how to operate safely in cyberspace.

“This helps to further promote Leicester and Leicestershire as a centre for digital growth and is part of DMU’s ongoing commitment to the economic development of our community.”

Also in September, the CTI is providing a forum for researchers, practitioners and developers to share their experiences and discuss the latest advances and innovations in software engineering for smart systems.
