DMU's outstanding new-look campus wins two top awards


De Montfort University Leicester’s outstanding new-look campus has won two more top prizes at an awards ceremony celebrating the year’s best construction projects.

The striking £43 million Vijay Patel Building, which is home to the university’s prestigious art and design courses, and the newly landscaped Mill Lane area, that runs through the heart of the campus, were honoured at the 15th Annual ProCon Awards for Leicestershire.

The Vijay Patel Building won the Large Non-Residential Scheme of the Year category while the transformation of Mill Lane, submitted jointly by DMU, Leicester City Council and Danaher and Walsh, won the Small Non-Residential Scheme of the Year.

Leicester Castle Business School at DMU, which sensitively transformed the historic Great Hall of Leicester Castle, was shortlisted for the Regeneration Scheme of the Year.

The developers, architects, contractors and consultants who worked on the projects celebrated their successes at the King Power Stadium, home of DMU partners Leicester City. More than 620 people attended the ceremony which was hosted by broadcaster and former MP Gyles Brandreth.

Umesh Desai, Director of Estates at DMU, oversaw the three projects on behalf of the university.

He said: “All of the team involved in the construction of the Vijay Patel Building and the landscaping of the Mill Lane area are delighted to be recognised again for their outstanding work.

ProCon chair Pam Allardice, of the construction law firm Allardice Associates, said:  “This is the 15th year of the ProCon Awards and, once again, outstanding projects have been chosen as winners. Their quality underlines the strengths of the businesses and people behind them.”

So far this year the Vijay Patel Building, which was designed by CPMG Architects, has been named as the best educational building in the East Midlands at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) awards.

While, Leicester Civic Society named it the best new building in Leicester. The society described the Vijay Patel building as ‘uncompromisingly modern’ which is ‘in scale and harmony with its important historic surroundings’.
