CLEARING 2017 - 'Applying was simple, straightforward and friendly'

Applying through Clearing could not have been easier or simpler for Graphic Design student Laura Proverbs.

She had originally not applied to university at all because she was concerned she would not get the grades – but then did far better than she had expected.

So Laura, from Cannock in Staffordshire, researched the universities she was interested in to help her achieve her dream of becoming a successful graphic designer.

She was impressed by DMU’s graduate employability rate and the emphasis placed on helping and supporting students to get a good job after graduating.

She picked up the phone and called DMU’s Clearing hotline and was impressed by the friendly approach. “I found the clearing process, very easy, and straight forward.

“Everything happened within less than 24 hours, I'd had my portfolio looked at, I'd had my offer, I'd accepted my offer, and was looking to book accommodation!”

Laura, who applied in 2015, has since combined her studies at DMU with practical experience. She has worked as a junior graphic designer in Featherstone this summer, which has allowed her to put her skills into practice.

She said: “With my work experience, you can put to use the skills that you learn in university to the test. This has been amazing for me, as I have learnt a range of new skills.”

Laura also joined  the F10 Society, which sees graphic designers and other creative offer their skills and ideas in response to live briefs set by the university, Demon media, De Montfort University Students’ Union and local businesses.

She said: “I’m currently a member of F10 design society. I currently enjoy swimming, singing, and spending time with my friends and family. However, starting at the beginning of the year I am looking to join more societies, along with re-joining the F10 design society.”

As she prepares to begin her final year, Laura said she is grateful for the clearing process at DMU.
She said: “Everything about the process was incredibly simple; the staff in particular couldn't have been any more helpful. I am looking at going to #DMUglobal's next trip to New York.”
