De Montfort University Leicester’s (DMU) biggest-ever international visit to New York has been shortlisted for an award recognising innovative student experience.
DMU’s award-winning international experience programme, #DMUglobal, co-ordinated the visit for 1,000 students to New York and has now been announced as a contender for Innovation Award for Excellence in Student Experience at an annual CUBO celebration.
The visit included students from a variety of courses, offering a tailored experience to help enhance their understanding of topics covered in the classroom. They also had opportunities to experience the city and appreciate iconic sights and cultural experiences as part of the trip.
There was also a chance for students to meet bestselling author Lee Child, who talked about his writing and gave them an exclusive screening of the new Jack Reacher film, Never Go Back.
Head of #DMUglobal, Leo Smith, said: "Planning and delivering this unique opportunity for DMU students has been a challenging yet rewarding experience for all of the staff involved.
"Ninety-six per cent of students have said they would encourage others to take part in a #DMUglobal experience, and overall satisfaction of ninety-four per cent shows what a success this student experience has been. It encourages us to make plans for 2018."
The CUBO awards were launched in 2012 to recognise achievements within the higher education industry and shortlisted entries are announced to members, who are invited to vote for their winner.
The awards are open to all higher education institutions and winners will be announced in June during the annual CUBO summer conference.
DMU’s outstanding student experience offers commitment and support by investing time and resources to push boundaries and help students to achieve their goals and make the most of the student experience.

The trip also helped to broaden cultural horizons and develop skills valued by employers. Students took part in activities that were tailored to their studies, as well as having opportunities to explore New York and find inspiration for their work.
#DMUglobal is set to become the most comprehensive international experience programme available at any UK university and the New York visit was so successful that another major international visit is planned later this year, giving 1,500 students the opportunity to visit Berlin.
DMU’s international experience programme previously triumphed in the Outstanding International Strategy category of the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards (THELMAs).
