DMU bucks national trend to see big rise in applications

An increase in applications from the UK and overseas has shown that there’s never been a better time to study at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

University admissions group UCAS reported that overall applications to UK universities had fallen by four per cent.

But DMU is bucking the trend with an increase in applications overall, including an impressive growth of almost a third from Europe.

The growing appeal of DMU among EU and overseas students has been helped by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard’s #LoveInternational campaign, which has seen him make several visits to key countries to let them know that, despite Brexit, DMU is a truly international university which continues to welcome students from around the globe.

Thousands of students have also enjoyed incredible overseas experiences during their studies through the pioneering #DMUglobal scheme.

The latest application figures at DMU come at a time when the institution is celebrating several achievements which puts us among the finest universities in the country.

Just last month, the university received the highest possible Gold award from the Teaching Excellence Framework, the first Government-backed measure which rewards and recognises the enormous value universities can bring to the lives of their students through excellent teaching, outstanding experiences and great employment opportunities.

Professor Shellard said at the time: “TEF is a massive watershed moment for all British universities and a real breakthrough moment for DMU.”

DMU was also named the best university in the country for helping students find highly skilled work or further study and the fifth best university for overall teaching excellence in new analysis, carried out by higher education experts Wonkhe.

While last week, DMU was named as one of the 20 best universities in the country for career prospects.

A total of 96.7% of graduates from summer 2016 are in work or further study after graduating, according to the annual Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DHLE) report. The national average for universities is 94.3%.

DMU marketing and communications director Melanie Fowler, who oversees student recruitment, said: “We are delighted to be showing an increase in applications year on year. It is further evidence that there has never been a better time to study at DMU.  The university was one of the 10 most popular for Home and EU students last year, and it is wonderful to see this trend continue.’

APPLICATIONS (2)

It is not too late to apply for a place at DMU this autumn. Our clearing lines have opened earlier than ever before.

Karla Juerges, DMU School and College Recruitment and Enquiries Manager, said: “Clearing has historically been thought of as the last resort or only for those students that don’t meet their grades.

“In fact Clearing is much more than that. Clearing is another opportunity to make the right choice about which course to study and which university to go to, or even to make a first application if students haven’t already done so.

“This is a huge decision to make and not everyone gets it right first time. So if you need help or would just like to talk through your options with a friendly advisor, get in touch.”
