Title chances realised in season's best for #TeamDMU

Dragons humiliate rivals Leicester to clinch top spot on the most successful British University and College Sports (BUCS) week of the season for De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) sports clubs.

DMU Men’s Volleyball smashed their way to a 3-0 straight set victory in fine style over University of Leicester on Wednesday afternoon, taking them top of BUCS Midlands Division 3A.

Club Chairman and first team player Bruno Iglesias said: “We went into the game coming of last year’s knowledge that they were a very good team.

“Since then, we have grown and trained hard to now be in a position where we can say we are top of the league and flying high.

“From the first serve on Wednesday, we knew it was a going to be a fun and competitive game.”

The Dragons got off to the perfect start, easily taking the first set and building in confidence as the game went on.

“Bruno said: “For us, there was no point in the game where we felt under much stress and we ended the first two sets with a very healthy point difference.

“Giving it our all we gracefully destroyed them point by point, focusing our effort on not letting them pick up easy points on our side.

“All in all it was a great game, spirits were high and everyone was playing amazing. We are looking forward to playing them at home next and then varsity after that.”

The team travel to face University of Cambridge 2nd on Wednesday 1 February.

Elsewhere, Men’s Basketball 1st consolidated their position at the top of BUCS Midlands Division 3B with a narrow victory over Loughborough 3rd, 70-66. They are currently one of the most in-form teams.

Women’s Tennis emphatically beat Nottingham Trent University 10-2 to kick-off their 2017 in style and the men’s side also fired their way to victory by the same scoreline.

Men’s rugby 2nd also clinched a convincing victory over Birmingham City 1st; 29-7.

The week ended with #TeamDMU securing 10 wins, 4 losses and just the 1 draw. A win rate of 66% was the highest this season so far.

A week earlier, DMU Equestrian jumped their way to a victory their Midlands competition at Witham Villa.

Chair Beth Collop and First Team Captain Lauren Allin finished third and fifth respectively, while the team clinched a deserved 1st place.

Beth said: “We were absolutely ecstatic with the result as all the girls had trained so hard last term, so they really deserved the win.

“I am thrilled with my third place result. I and Lauren (also placed) both trained weekly and also put in extra training sessions to improve.”

Also competing on a bitterly cold afternoon were Loughborough University, Leicester and Sheffield Hallam.

Beth continued to say: “Loughborough have been a really strong team, so we didn’t imagine beating them.

“An aspiration is to keep performing as well as we did as it gives us a lot of confidence for varsity as we beat Leicester by 86 points.”
