Head of Channel 4 news to give insider tips to DMU students at careers event


One of the leading names in UK media will be giving students at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) advice on how to break into the industry.

Dorothy Byrne, head of news and current affairs at Channel 4 will give insider tips at an employability and postgraduate event being held by DMU's Leicester Media School.

She will join Lindsey Sheffield, a director and assistant producer with ITV, as guest speaker at the event, which will take place between 1pm and 4pm on Wednesday 25 January.

Along with talks by the two speakers, the event will include workshops and taster sessions on industry, employability and postgraduate work.

Employers and alumni in media fields will also be at the event to give information and tips to current and prospective students.

As head of news and current affairs at Channel 4, Dorothy Byrne is responsible for the channel's news output, including Channel 4 News, award-winning investigative documentary series Dispatches and the wealth of independent current affairs programming the channel airs.

While Lindsey Sheffield has worked on programmes for Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV, Sky, Discovery and the BBC, including The Gadget Show, The Jeremy Kyle Show and Embarrassing Bodies.

The event is not the first collaboration DMU has made with Channel 4.

The broadcaster has teamed up with DMU to provide a new  Investigative Journalism MA. The course, which is endorsed by and developed with Channel 4,  covers areas including techniques of in-depth research, including handling complex data, understanding financial information, working undercover, financial information, using freedom of information, the law, compliance and safety, alongside filming and editing.  Students learn how to identify, pitch, research and film investigative stories.

Channel 4 and DMU's Faculty of Technology are offering bursaries for students looking to enrol on the MA.
