Up to 1,000 DMU students are packing their bags for a career-enhancing trip of a lifetime

Excited De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) students are packing their bags for a journey that could help realise their future career ambitions, after being accepted to visit New York on a #DMUglobal trip of a lifetime.

In January, around 1,000 students will jet off to the States to enhance their global outlook with a mixture of academic, cultural and networking opportunities in the Big Apple.

One of those lucky enough to be accepted on the trip was Montana Morgan, a third year Business and Management BA (Hons) student.

She said: “When I received the email from #DMUglobal, I honestly couldn’t believe that I had been picked as one of the 1,000 students to go to New York.

“Not only will the trip provide me with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity relevant to my degree, but it will stand me in good stead for my graduate prospects. How many people can say they’ve visited the United Nations Headquarters of the Federal Bank?

“I don’t know of any other university that takes so many of their students to the USA, and I feel privileged that DMU is in a position to do so.”

Students going on the trip were all eligible for a special £600 bursary, which will be deducted from travel, accommodation and transfer costs. The estimated total cost of travel, accommodation and transfers is £850.

Events throughout the trip are based around students’ chosen themes, which include: Business and Finance, Fashion and Textiles, English Language, LGBT History, Music Technology, Media Production, Sport and many more.

Jordan Parker, a third year Dance BA (Hons) student said: “When I first saw the trip advertised, I knew it was going to be special for a lot of people, including myself.

“When I got the acceptance email, I could hardly believe it. I’d been offered to go to the States before on school trips as a kid, but being from a single parent family, it was never an option.”

The trip, running from Tuesday 3 January to Sunday 8 January, will see students staying in the heart of Manhattan.

Open to final year students on all courses, across all faculties, the trip was hugely popular with 250 applications submitted in the first 36 hours of the application stage. The trip was later extended to students from all years.

Jordan hopes that the trip may influence not only what he pursues as a future career, but also where. He said: “The trip may trigger thoughts to move abroad if company ideas are more viable in a city such as New York.

“When I am out there, I definitely want to explore the local culture and see what the performing arts scene is like on a smaller scale, at the lesser known companies away from Broadway.

“Of course I will also be doing a lot of sightseeing while I am there; it just has to be done in a city so rich in big and beautiful sites.”

Advertising and Marketing BA (Hons) student Adam Bly also hopes the trip will open perspectives as to where he may work in the future:  “I’ve always wanted to go to New York and maybe even work there one day.

“Being given the chance to visit the city with #DMUglobal is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’m so excited to have been selected.”
