Graduate lands role helping shape the future of TV at Channel 5

A Film Studies graduate from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) will be helping to shape the schedules at Channel 5 after landing an internship at the station.

Amber Maishment said it was the media and production modules she studied on her course that gave her the edge when applying for the sought-after position at the channel.

As a Viewer Insight and Programme Research intern, Amber will be looking at the viewing habits of people and feeding this information into programme schedulers and commissioners to help create the next generation of TV shows.

The 22-year-old said that after finishing her degree with a 2:1, she spotted the position advertised online.

She said: "I applied online by answering some questions and attaching my CV before being chosen to enter the interview and presentation stages. After an assessment, two interviews and a presentation, I was offered the internship. It felt brilliant.

"My work will involve audience and programme research, studying viewers and the programmes they watch to find trends and relationships between the two.

"These trends will then be applied to a company level for the channel to know what to change or improve or keep the same."

Amber said it was the variety of the work at DMU which really helped her prepare for the new role.

She said: "What I loved about my course was the variety of modules we could choose from. I was able to choose a couple of production modules which allowed me to work practically on short films and adverts, as well as picking history and writing modules.

Also in my final year we were able to pick some media modules, which I felt really helpful in broadening knowledge and career prospects.

At DMU really liked having everything very close - between campus and halls - and the city centre was right next door."

Programme research is a common entry point for a range of behind-the-scenes TV careers, which Amber said she was really excited about.

She said: "I hope working for Channel 5 will allow me to get my foot stuck in the industry door and develop my skills at a company level.

"It'd be great to follow this path through and be a really influence the range and choice of programmes in the future."
