Dan Winney, the newly-elected President of De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) said the moment he heard he’d won the vote was the proudest of his life.
After a busy few weeks of campaigning, Friday night saw the results of this year’s DSU executive team elections announced at De Montfort University Leicester’s (DMU) Campus Centre.
A packed crowd in The Lobby watched as winners for each of the six part-time and five full-time positions were revealed, with each elected official invited up onto stage to a chorus of cheers and applause.
A record number of students had cast their votes, with 4,942 DMU students – over 1,200 more than the previous record set in 2015 – having their say on who should best represent them.
For Dan – who previously served on the Executive team as Vice President Student Activities – the moment he heard his name read out as winner was a big one.
He said: “It’s been a really good week. First our men’s firsts won the football in Varsity and now this: awesome.
“This is the proudest moment of my life. I was up against some really strong candidates so to win is something special.”

In between congratulatory handshakes and back-slaps from friends, he said that his immediate focus would be the handover in July for the new DSU premises: it’ll be really important to get that right.
“And also I want to get the new Exec team bonded together. A lot of us know each other already but it’s important to really start working closely together.”
Dan wasn’t the only officer re-elected to the executive. Keira Rounsley was voted in to the post of Vice President Welfare and Community for a second consecutive year.
She said: “I’m a bit all over the place, so happy to get a second term. This year I want to do a survey to really capture everyone’s welfare needs and work with mental and sexual health priorities.”
