People invited to free lunchtime debate on the EU Referendum with DMU experts

People are being invited to take part in a debate on the EU at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) this week as part of its student-led 100 Ideas for Europe project.



The Great British EU Debate is being held on Thursday 10 March and will feature a panel of experts to answer questions and listen to views as the country prepares for the Referendum.

People will go to the polls on June 23 over whether Britain should remain part of the European Union or leave the European Union.

Professor Alasdair Blair, Head of the Department of Politics and Public Policy, will be chairing the Question Time-style event in Hugh Aston 3.04 from 1pm to 2pm.

On the panel are: 

•    Professor Cillian Ryan, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law and economics expert
•    Professor Estella Baker, Professor of European Law and Criminal Justice
•    Alistair Jones, politics lecturer and author of Britain and the European Union
•    Dr Irene Antonopoulos, human rights expert
•    Dr Tom Allen, political economist
 
The event is being organised as part of 100 Ideas for Europe, a project to give students real-world experience of the issues and debates in political campaigns.

DMU Policy Commission, formed by the university’s award-winning Department of Politics and Public Policy and the university’s Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, launched 100 Ideas for Europe to give young people a voice in the process and ensure they have their say in the future of the country.

100 Ideas for Europe will see our students hit the streets to canvas the opinions of residents, businesses, school children, workers and families about Britain’s membership of the EU.

They will then use those discussions to formulate 100 policy ideas into a document that will be presented to politicians ahead of the Referendum due to take place on June 23.

Any British, Irish or Commonwealth citizens over 18 registered in the UK are eligible to vote, along with UK nationals living abroad who have been on the UK electoral register in the UK in the past 15 years, as well as Commonwealth citizens.
