DMU "will remain a global university", says Vice-Chancellor
De Montfort University will continue to welcome students from all countries. So said Professor Dominic Shellard, DMU’s Vice-Chancellor, following the result of the EU referendum – that the UK would leave the EU.
“Our international students come to DMU for many reasons - its academic excellence, the rich student experience, links with industry and game-changing opportunities to volunteer both locally and internationally through our pioneering initiatives, #DMUlocal and #DMUglobal. These will remain central to what we have to offer our students.”
For many of its international students – who come from more than 130 countries – it was the university’s global outlook that was one of the main attractions of coming to DMU. Salah Maswoud, from Libya said: “It is a multicultural university. DMU to me is global and diverse.”
DMU graduate Victoria Ganusceac, who was born in Moldova, said: “It is a good location. Leicester is a multicultural, diverse place which is exciting for a fashion student.”
When asked to sum up DMU in one word, she said: “Welcoming.”
Malaysian student Ivan Hon Joon Yip, agreed it was a ‘really welcoming’ university, and added: “Everyone is so supportive, no matter whether it is the lecturers or the students. Everybody is so nice here.”
Like many universities, DMU has significant numbers of EU students and staff. Addressing them, Professor Shellard said: “You will always be cherished at DMU and I recognize the enormous contribution you make to our superb university. DMU will always be a source of intellectual stimulation, enjoyment and support for you.”
“There are uncertainties around many of the implications of this decision, but we will be working closely with our international partners, funding bodies and others to discuss this further and ensure that any impact is fully understood and disseminated. Whatever the implications are, DMU will remain a global university with an international outlook and a rich and diverse student and staff population.”
