A new exhibition which highlights students’ responses to mental health issues, and in particular social anxiety, has gone on public display.
The Human Condition features a variety of work from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)’s Fine Art students, from installation to digital photography, charcoal drawings, paintings and sculpture.
Khadija Adam, Heather Boneham, Annie Dixon, Emily Hayland and Linda Prendergast spent Monday putting the exhibition on and welcomed friends, family and members of the city’s art community to a successful preview show last night.
The exhibition will be open from 11am to 5pm daily at the WotSPACE, 3 Shires Lane, Leicester until 1 May.
One member of the group, Heather Boneham, said: “We are excited to have this valuable opportunity to exhibit our work as a group and through our art we hope to raise awareness and encourage a greater understanding of mental health and related issues - something we all feel strongly about.”
Heather created an installation of pillows, stitched and sewn out of shape with the sound of a beating heart inside. She said: “I wanted to take an object of comfort, and distort it.”
Annie Dixon’s work, is This Your Cloud of Thought takes reflections as its theme, while Emily Hayland works on introspection through a series of images, Linda Prendergast used recycled materials to create 2D and 3D sculptures and paintings.
Tina Barton runs WotSPACE, a community resource which, in Partnership with Hammersons, puts on pop-up events throughout the year. She said: “They have done a fantastic job on this exhibition and looking forward to seeing lots of people to see the show.”
The students' comments book was filled with praise. Zenab Adam said: "Lovely pieces of artwork. Well done, ladies."
Mehmud Adah wrote: "Some very interesting art work created by these young ladies. Congratulations to them and their awesome work."
