More than 70 businesses covering everything from healthcare to high street fashion are coming to De Montfort University Leicester to take part in the university’s biggest ever careers fair, as they search for the future stars of the workplace.
DMU was this year named among the top 25 universities in the UK for employability and continues to build on its reputation for preparing students for the world of work by staging its annual Internships, Placements and Graduates Careers Fair.
Exhibitors include giants in their sectors such as Next, HSBC, Vodafone, BUPA, New Look, Xerox, Hewlett Packard, the NHS, Boots, Barratt Developments, TK Maxx and JCB.
DMU’s Employer Development Manager Stuart Marriott has stressed how the business attending the fair are very keen to recruit DMU students and graduates and urged everyone to grab the opportunity to impress.
The event, on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October between 11am and 3pm, will take place at the newly opened The Venue@DMU, a purpose built events venue next to the university’s QEII leisure centre which is the new home for all major events including matriculation, graduations and careers fairs.
Students and staff can come along to the free event and meet representatives from some of the biggest businesses in the UK, many of which have thriving partnerships with the university and are keen to offer incredible work opportunities for students and graduates.
The reason for holding the fair so soon after the start of the new academic year is to give students a head start in finding opportunities to practice the skills they have learned in the lecture theatre, studio and laboratory and apply them in the workplace. It also gives final year students the opportunity to get early advice from graduate recruiters.
Alongside the exhibitors there are a number of DMU stands covering Careers Advice, Placements, Postgraduate Opportunities, Enterprise and Innovation, Frontrunners, Unitemps, #DMUGlobal, Knowledge Transfer, DMU Square Mile, Macmillan and DSU Volunteering.
DMU’s Employer Development Manager Stuart Marriott said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for students to come along and meet some of the giants of the business world and find out what internships and jobs they are offering.
“These exhibitors have bought stand space – they’re paying to come here rather than attending the event for the sake of it. They are really keen to recruit DMU students and graduates.”
There will be different employers attending each day of the event.
Latest results from the annual Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey reported that 95.8% of DMU graduates from summer 2014 were in work or further study six months after graduating – above the national average of 93.2%. More than three-quarters were in graduate-level jobs.
DMU’s excellent record on graduate employability has seen it put in another strong performance in the Sunday Times Good University Guide league tables this year.
DMU enjoyed a meteoric rise up the tables last year, which saw it leap 32 places from 86thto 54th position, to be the most improved university in Britain.
Alastair McCall, editor of The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016, has praised DMU for not only maintaining a strong position but rising a further place to 53rdthis year.
