Contour Fashion graduate Selina Bond’s growing reputation for sexy, sophisticated designs have earned her a place on an enviable shortlist – for New Designer of the Year.
Selina is one of just five names in the running for the accolade, due to be presented at a glittering awards ceremony in London on December 2.
“I was so shocked and so happy to be nominated,” said Selina, who graduated in 2014. “It’s quite overwhelming that my peers in the industry have shortlisted me for this award, it gives me confidence that I’m doing a good job and excites me that people will look for my next collection with interest. I’m so nervous but excited to attend.”

Contour graduate lands place working for Australian swimwear brandSelina’s GFW collection was a feminine but bold creation, inspired by the catacombs of San Gennaro, Napoli. “I loved the way the skulls were embellished with lace and jewels. Then I looked into Italian nun’s head dresses; I wanted to represent the headdress with a material that hasn’t been used before.
“I chose carbon fibre because I loved the texture and high shine you get with the material. I wanted to use structured pieces of unexpected parings of lace.”
Her collection – from initial inspiration to whole collection – took six months to complete. The longest time was spent making the carbon fibre moulds for her eyecatching hats and skirts. “It was great working with this material, especially the way it can be formed so exactly to the feminine contours in a way that produces a very dominant image.”
Lingerie favourites such as Nichole De Carle London – herself a DMU graduate – and Lascivious Instagrammed her collection and it was also featured in Vogue. A panel of judges from buyers to trend forecasters chose the nominees for the New Designer category, part of the UK Lingerie Awards.
Selina – who is now busy designing and making her next collection, to be launched in the new year – is heading to London for the event next week.
A spokesman for the awards said: “The standard of entries this year was incredibly high, which made judging a tough task, and we would like to thank everyone who put so much hard work into contributing towards the nominations process.”
The UK Lingerie Awards is the mostly hotly-anticipated event in the intimate apparel calendar, with a spectacular party where the leading lights of the industry come together for a night of business networking, dancing and the big reveal of the UKLA award winners.
Guests are also treated to a catwalk show, featuring the most innovative and fashionable lingerie collections set to launch in retail stores next season.
The event will take place at the Freemasons’ Hall in London’s Covent Garden.
