The music industry is a notoriously difficult one to get your foot in the door of, but one De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) graduate is hard at work with his band ‘The Unruly’ on their second album.
Martyn Storey (pictured, right), a 2010 graduate from the BSc (Hons) Audio Recording and Technology course at DMU, formed his band with his friend Ricky Bateman in their hometown of Market Harborough, Leicester, two years after he graduated.
The two met at a festival for young local musicians when they were both organisers of the event and The Unruly, primarily a rock band, was born shortly after.
Martyn said: “I was working as a self-employed musician and audio engineer but I’ve been playing guitar for 13 years now, it’s always been a huge part of my life and being in a band is something I’d always wanted to do.”
Despite ongoing efforts to expand the band, Martyn still handles the same workload he took on when the band formed, taking care of the production side of things, something he feels he is able to do thanks to the skills he learned at DMU.
He added: “The course was extremely useful. I’m doing production which is all done in-house using skills that I picked up on the course.
“I really enjoyed my time there. I loved having the opportunity to use all the kit, and the facilities were absolutely brilliant.
“The course was very helpful to what I’m doing now, it was informative and helped me to progress to use these skills outside on my own work.”
The Unruly released their debut album, ‘Open It Up’, in January 2013 and in the same year they were featured on BBC Introducing by BBC Radio Northampton.
The band then decided to take a bit of time out to clarify what direction Martyn and Ricky wanted to take The Unruly in.
Martyn said: “Our first album was a bit experimental which I think was a phase we got out of the way there and then. We had a year out and then regrouped and focused on more of a rock sound, and we’re working on the second album as we speak.”
