More than 550 members of DSU sports teams attended the black-tie event at The Athena, Leicester, to celebrate the passion, commitment and success of everyone involved over the past year.

Ross Harrison, DSU Sport Development Manager, co-hosted the ceremony with DSU Vice-President Stephen Burrell, with all teams firmly having their sights set on the grand prize of club of the year.

Ross said: “For the third year running, the SULets Colours Sports Awards was a sell-out, with the great and good turning out in force to pay tribute to the various DMU sports teams and individuals who have really shone this year.”

The winners on the night were:

  • Most improved club – Equestrian
  • Most dedicated club member – Toni Mallin (Women’s Football)
  • Most dedicated chair – Abi Battisto (Women’s Football)
  • Most charitable club – Men’s and Women’s Football teams
  • Sporting performance of the year – Rowing team for their 8-1 Varsity win
  • Coach of the year – Cara Murphy and Sarah Smith (DMU Saints cheerleading)

Gemma Muskett, Chairwoman of the DMU Saints, said: “To be recognised as Team of the Year has been a really fantastic way to end the academic year for us, and so rewarding to know our hard work throughout the year has been noticed by everyone.

“The squad and our coaches have put their all into training and cheer in general, and it's made all the hard work worth it - we couldn't have achieved it without everyone working hard together, and the incredible support from the Sports Office, SU and everyone across the other teams.

“I'm incredibly proud of them all and ecstatic to have won!"

The DMU Saints were certainly deserving of their award after a hugely impressive year in which they won their Varsity event and were also crowned champions at the University Nationals Cheer and Dance Competition in March.

Abi Battisto, Chairwoman of Women’s Football, said: “I really wasn’t expecting to win, I’m only in my second year and it’s my first on the committee. All the others up there on the night were worthy winners too.

“We’ve had a really good season but we’ve just been so unlucky with results. Next year we’re going to smash it.”

The DMU Women’s Football team enjoyed a successful year on the pitch, agonisingly missing out on their league title by two points and missing out on Varsity glory courtesy of a penalty shootout.
