Students shine in front of international press at GREAT Festival

Press flocked to DMU students at the British Government’s GREAT Festival of Creativity in Shanghai as they wowed international audiences.

Footwear Design, Contour Fashion and Game Art students were all filmed showcasing their talent at the prestigious event, and Drama and Performing Arts graduates performed a brilliant and original Shakespeare-inspired piece to cameras.

Media included filming from China Daily News and Zee-TV, as well as Chinese regional channels Channel Young and CABC.

The university was selected as the sole education partner for the festival which celebrated creativity and commerce, and exhibited some of the best of British brands and innovation.

Katie Hallaron, third year Game Art student said: “I am so proud to be here at the festival, you get to meet a huge spectrum of people with common goals. It was great to meet others who are looking forwards to the future.

“We were filmed three times by media in one day! It’s good to see people from so many different countries interested in what you do.”

#DMUglobal student Jake Bonham, in his third year of BA Photography and Video, on a faculty-led field trip with the DMU’s pioneering international experience programme said: “It was brilliant to work in an environment alongside other people from a career I am interested in, watching professional photographers and filmmakers at work.

“I have learnt about it on my course and it was really interesting to see it in practice in a real-life environment.

“Photographing fellow DMU students at the festival has been fun and it was good to be part of the media buzz which they created.”

Jenni Smith who graduated with a first from DMU’s Drama degree and performed at the festival, said: “I have to admit I was terrified by all the attention, but also genuinely appreciated it. When people film you, it immortalises what you are doing.

“It wasn’t just the media, there were lots of people filming us on their phones and iPads. That’s when you know you have done a good job, as it’s obviously something they want to keep.”

Jenni continued: “It’s been one of those experiences which makes you think of who you are on a global scale and how far other people have come in the world.

“It’s so inspiring hearing all the stories from those at the festival who have really pursued their ideas with creativity and intelligence, including fellow peers at DMU.”
