International student Linh thought she was dreaming when she got the call to tell her she had won a prestigious all-expenses-paid scholarship to De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).
She was chosen from entrants all around the world to win the DMU Square Mile International Scholarship which includes full tuition fees and a monthly allowance, plus flights to and from home.
It meant Linh could fulfil her dream of further study after completing a degree in her home country of Vietnam.
She said: “I applied on the deadline day – the last possible day – and I thought I would not win. I remember the day I got the call from DMU, I was sleeping and my phone went, and I didn’t recognise the number.
“I answered and the woman on the other end said: ‘congratulations, you have won!”’ I could not believe it. I thought I was dreaming and she had to repeat it twice before I realised it was true.”
Linh – full name Nguyen Thuy Linh - is studying an International Business Masters in Corporate Social Responsibility, the sector in which she works in Hanoi.
She said she has found Leicester a very welcoming city and has been enjoying visiting museums and the countryside on days out with new friends.
She said: “My background is working for NGOs and I am interested in corporate social responsibility. The UK is very well known for its work in CSR and I want to get some experience of working in the UK so I can apply my knowledge when I finish my course.”
