A Dance graduate of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is about to perform her work overseas for the first time, after being chosen to represent the UK at an international arts festival in Milan.

Katherine Hall, who was awarded a First-Class Honours degree in 2012, staying on at DMU to achieve a Master of Arts in 2014, is one of 15 artists to be selected by the UK Young Artists organisation to perform at the Mediterranea 17 Young Artists Biennale in Milan, in October. The artists will be fully funded by UK Young Artists.
The DMU dance artist caught the eye of a panel of UK Young Artists Ambassadors, all award-winning and internationally recognised creative practitioners in their own right, at UK Young Artists Leicester Festival 2014.
Katherine’s choreography thrives on blurring performance disciplines, combining movement, voice, improvisation, writing and score-making. The Milan festival will see her perform her work Fill in the ____, an intimate lecture that uses text, task-based episodes and song to examine the fragility of human relationships and oddities of perceiving and managing time.
She is delighted to get this career-changing opportunity: “As a dance artist in the early years of my performance practice… I am looking forward to taking my performance work abroad for the first time, oh yes!
“Also, I look forward to connecting with young artists from all over the world, sharing our ways of thinking and working and finding out all about the art that they create.”
UK Young Artists showcases young creative practitioners aged 18-30 whose work spans all creative disciplines, from visual arts to music, performance and literature. It holds national festivals every two years in the East Midlands, as well as supporting young artists to represent the UK at international festivals.
DMU’s Head of School of Arts, Rob Brannen, who chairs the board of UK Young Artists, said:
“Building a career as an independent artist can be challenging at first so UK Young Artists supports young creatives at a crucial time in their career to establish contacts and exhibit their work professionally.
“By participating in Mediterranea 17, the young artists are able to do this on an international scale. The cross-cultural dialogues and creative exchanges they experience in Milan will help to develop and shape their artistic practices and provide them with valuable international recognition for their work.”
