A De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) student reached the finals of a competition to find the best new ideas in textile design.
Stunning: Catriona's designs on the catwalk of Graduate Fashion Week
The David Band Textile Award is given to the young designers who create innovative new ways of working with materials and “challenge the established boundaries of technical excellence”. It is named after the late artist and designer David Band and presented annually at Graduate Fashion Week, London.
Fashion Design student Catriona Pringle was named as first runner-up in the competition for her clever use of large-scale embroidery – using rope, ribbon and leather to weave intricate patterns on rug canvas as part of her collection.
She said: “My mum did embroidery and was the original inspiration for the work, I just tripled the size of the pieces she was making to make it more impactful. I did spend quite a lot of time figuring out the pattern and getting everything to work with the other materials.
“It was really cool to see my collection on the catwalk of Graduate Fashion Week. I saw it more than once, because we saw it as part of the DMU show, then for the gala.
“I got to meet the different judges and chatted to the creative director of Pringles knitwear who was very interested in what I was doing and very complementary.”
