Thousands of DMU students graduated in July after years of hard work. We reported some of their stories in our Class of 2015 series...
Student Laura Allitt has secured a job in the video game industry after taking advantage of a long-standing partnership between De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) and a specialist creative technology college to boost her career prospects.
Laura, who completed the FdSc Games Technology course at the Confetti Institute in Nottingham before ‘topping-up’ to a BSc (Hons) Games Technology degree at DMU, is now working as a QA game tester for Ubisoft Blue Byte in Düsseldorf, Germany, which has produced popular titles such as Anno Online and The Settlers Online.
Studying at DMU meant she was able to build up a portfolio of work and during her favourite module she teamed up with others on the course to create a video game from scratch. She also gained valuable experience of 3D modelling, 2D art, programming and even post-production for video and film.
She said: “The ability to turn my foundation degree into something more was a huge influence on me coming to DMU. Also, being able to move to a new city, make new friends and gain some independence was very appealing. Moving into halls and experiencing the university lifestyle has been great – even though it has only lasted a year!”
Laura, from Nottingham, who met Prince Harry when he visited Confetti in April 2013, added: “The staff at both institutions were very supportive throughout and this has definitely helped with the transition. Even though I didn’t take the typical route to get my degree, it was all still possible thanks to Confetti and DMU.”
The Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies has worked with DMU since 2003. It is a custom-designed facility for students who want to pursue careers in creative industries. Courses cover music technology, TV and film production technology and audio and recording technology.
