DMU students named among Leicester's Young Achievers

A De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) student has been named Undergraduate Student of the Year for his dedication to academic excellence.

Advertising and Marketing Communications student David Amayo-Morrison, of DMU’s Faculty of Business and Law, won the accolade at this year’s Leicester Mercury Young Achievers’ Awards.

And Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science student Jessica Okoro, who also volunteers with DMU's Square Mile project, was also nominated in the Science and Mathematics category, which was won by Leicester College pupil Alex Thornhill

David, who is in his third year, was nominated for his dedication to studying – spending up to eight hours revising in the library - and his efforts to put his studies into practice, forming Prodigy Media, a marketing consultancy to help small businesses develop better brands.

During his time at DMU, David has also completed an internship at ITV, and had some of his poetry published.

David has worked in retail and customer service based jobs to fund himself through his studies and this summer he was awarded a Gradbridge Award; sponsored and recognised by some of the FTSE 100, 250 and 500 firms.

His nomination form described him as “smart, proactive and driven”.

David, from London, found out he had won the award at a dinner for the nominees in Leicester last week.

He said: “It’s nice to be recognised for my efforts.”

The awards ceremony, held at the King Power Stadium on Thursday, recognised the outstanding work and achievements of young people across the city and county.
