It might not even be Christmas yet, but this year is set to be a record-breaker for De Montfort Students’ Union’s sports teams and societies.
The DSU has seen unprecedented interest from students wanting to join the incredible number of societies, which range from Street Law to Politics, the Vegan Society, Bhangra and Game of Thrones.

There have been 3,400 society memberships sold already – more than there have ever been by this time of the year.
Playing for laughs: DMU Comedy SocietyNot only are students having fun and making new friends but they are also embracing DMU’s public good ethos and helping to raise funds for good causes. For example, DMU’s Islamic Society raised more than £7,000 in just one week for its Charity Week – an incredible result.
Dave and Ricky, nominated for best presenter at this year's SRA AwardsDemonFM also reached the national finals of this year’s Student Radio Awards with four separate nominations.
Sports-wise, DSU’s men’s football and men’s badminton teams are top of the league while the DMU Saints cheerleaders are regional, national and European champs.
And DMU has also tasted success in the BUCS league with three students who have national titles: Maddison Moore (karate), Ricky Miller (K1 and K1 Sprint kayaker) and Niamh Bailey (heptathlon).
DMU and DSU both place huge importance on offering an exceptional student experience and recognize that all students should be able to work hard and play hard.
This year, DMU invested £1million in The Watershed (
pictured above) a new venue to cater for activities such as five-a-side football, badminton, netball, basketball, and indoor cricket as well as hosting meetings and activities for DMU’s 100-plus societies.
The incredible year so far is due to be celebrated at a huge Sports and Societies dinner taking place on Friday at The Venue@DMU, hosted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard.
DMU Kuwaiti SocietyDan Winney, Vice-President Student Activities, said: “Both the DSU Sports teams and DSU Societies are performing better than ever and set to smash records this year.
“We are really seeing return on their commitment, professionalism and leadership. Long may it continue!”
Crowds at Leicester Tigers’ game at the weekend were able to cheer as DSU’s teams as they performed during the match and at half-time of the Tigers’ stunning 21-11 victory over rivals Bath.
DMU Steppers were in the Final Whistle bar ahead of kick off, DMU Saints cheered and formed part of the guard of honour before DMU Dance entertained at half-time. DMU men’s and women’s rugby were competing in the Big Boot Challenge at half time.
And it does not stop there - DSU’s latest sports project, Campus 330, has offered free sports and fitness taster sessions to more than 1,000 students and staff in activities including basketball, indoor football, running and boxing.
