Physics students at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) were visited by Rolls-Royce this week to receive careers advice and inspiration for their futures.
The first year students were visited by Andrew Law, an expert from Rolls-Royce’s Civil Nuclear division, who shared his experiences and offered advice on where their physics degrees could potentially take them.
Andrew said: “I’m visiting to share with students what the benefits are of having a physics degree and how it can be used in the industry, in particular within the different aspects of Rolls-Royce and how it’s useful in that respect.
“At this stage of their careers, it’s vital that students think about the direction they want to be going in two or three years’ time.
“It’s crucial that they have an idea of where they want to go in physics, so what I can do is inform them of various businesses which employ physics graduates that they might not know of and share with them what’s actually out there.
“At Rolls-Royce we depend on new graduates to bolster our population. They bring fresh ideas to what we’re doing and they are vital in keeping us up-to-date in the modern industry.”
Andrew, who is the Technical Specialist - Installation and Commissioning at Rolls-Royce, is well known within the Faculty of Technology at DMU as he played an important role by offering his support to the Physics course upon its inception.
Marie Bassford, Physics course leader at DMU, said: “Four years ago, my colleague and I were approached by Andrew to do some company-sponsored research and development for Rolls-Royce, based upon our combined expertise in optics and robotics. We have kept in touch ever since and are delighted that Andrew was happy to visit us and enthuse students with his experiences.
“For physics students it is important that they set their sights as high as possible. It doesn’t get much higher than Rolls-Royce, so this is a fantastic insight into the opportunities out there that will enable our students to prepare themselves for working in this kind of industry.”
Rolls-Royce was founded in 1906 and for over a century has been producing power systems for aircraft, ships and land applications, as well as their own brand of luxury motor vehicles.
