This presentation, the next in our Prison and Probation Research Hub Seminar Series examines the contribution of the co-production of art in transforming peoples’ social worlds.
These worlds reflect experiences of post-conflict and carceral spaces where art is represented as signifier of transformation and change. Presented by Dr Susie Atherton, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Gloucestershire and Dr Omar El Masri, Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Gloucestershire, this session will examine how art in these settings changes self-identity and liberates participants from social controls and a lack of agency.
Drawing from research conducted at HMP Leicester and in the post-conflict cities of Beirut and Belfast, where a participatory action research approach was adopted to examine the work of the Soft Touch Arts charity and the production of street artwork in Beirut and Belfast, they will demonstrate that hope became the key mechanism for transformation and change.
Chaired by Dr Victoria Knight, Associate Professor of Research, Community and Criminal Justice and Director of the Prison and Probation Research Hub this presentation will be followed by a Q&A.
