As part of Black History Month, we’re delighted to welcome a panel of marketing experts including Shanice Dover (gal-dem), Heather Marks (Words of Colour) and Chetna Ratan (Curve Theatre) to discuss their careers to date, pathways into marketing, and how they’ve navigated their respective roles as a person of colour. This online session will be chaired by Lecturer in Marketing, Farhana Shaikh.
This event is suitable for anyone interested in a career in or researchers and academics who wish to learn more about the specific challenges faced by Black marketing professionals.
Shanice Dover is a writer and Head of Social and Communications for new media publication gal-dem. Launched in 2015, gal-dem platforms the stories of people of colour from marginalised genders. With 7+ years experience in social media management, strategy and digital marketing, Shanice is driven by the community and connectivity of online channels. As a founding member of gal-dem magazine, Shanice has built and managed their social channels since 2015, contributing to their growth as an award winning media company that's disrupting UK journalism.
Heather Marks is a creative producer, editor and writer who works across the literature sector. She specialises in event and programme curation, independent research and PR. She is part of the immersive change agency Words of Colour, and has worked with a number of universities, the AKO Caine Prize, and independent press No Bindings. She is co-editor of the upcoming short story collection, The Book of Bristol (Comma Press), and has written for The Bookseller and The Stage. In her spare time she writes fiction and is currently developing a historical fiction YA novel set in eighteenth century Bristol.
Chetna Ratan has over 15 years' worth of both online and offline marketing experience and has developed a real passion for working in Arts Marketing whilst working for one of the UK's leading producing theatres. At Curve theatre in Leicester, Chetna takes a senior role within the Communications department and leads on the implementation of Curve's on and offline marketing campaign activity to promote all shows and events at Leicester as well as their National Made at Curve touring productions.
Places can be booked up to one hour before the event starts and registrants will receive a confirmation up to 24 hours before the event.
