The number of students in HE with a known disability is increasing (Hubble & Bolton, 2020. Support for Disabled Students in HE).
Support is provided for disabled students by higher education providers (HEPs) through reasonable adjustments, disability services and by the Government through Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs).
This session explores how staff can work more effectively, with DMU students in ways that are consistent, professional & supportive.
We shall explore the wide range of resources, support and guidance in existence to help you navigate student interactions and positively impact on the student experience.
Workshops aim to develop your confidence to refer to resources alongside an understanding about the limits of provision at the university and where external sources of support are required.
Aims & Objectives:
- To have discussed eligibility and application processes for DSA’s.
- To have discovered support available through DSA’s.
- To challenge stigma and discuss how to promote DSA in our working practices.
- To have identified institutional support students can access.
This event is free to attend and open to all DMU staff.
