Description

As part of the Prison and Probation Research Hub at DMU, we welcome Associate Professor Nicola Carr, University of Nottingham.

The Probation Service in England and Wales was brought back under public ownership in June 2021 following the ill-fated Transforming Rehabilitation reforms that had involved the privatization of probation services seven years previously. The decision to reverse privatization and to reunify services has been welcomed across a range of quarters. However, the reunification of probation also entails a more centralised mode of governance for probation across England and Wales. Alongside reunification, there has also been more emphasis placed on increasing the visibility of probation within the criminal justice system (Buckland, 2021). The implications of these changes in governance, including the relationships between local, regional and national levels, and what increasing visibility for community sanctions may mean, will be critically explored in this presentation, taking place as part of our @DMUPPHub Seminar Series
