This event is part of #DMUpride, to mark LGBTQ+ History Month.
This panel discussion celebrates the experience and expression of bisexuality. Moving beyond limiting notions of 'part heterosexual, part homosexual' as the normative conceptualisation of bisexuality, this event seeks to understand how bisexuals understand their sense of self and how we might better represent this in popular culture.
The event will be hosted by Jane Hearst (she/her), a bisexual PhD student at De Montfort University (DMU) specialising in Arts-for-Health. The panel members are:
Dr Connor Winterton (he/him), an academic with an interest in queer film analysis. His recent PhD investigated representations of sex in contemporary gay, lesbian and queer cinemas. He invites us to consider how we determine that a character is bisexual when film language has taught us to look for either queer or straight visual indicators.
Alex Millington (he/him): DMU PhD student in Performing Arts with a focus on theatrical intimacy on the contemporary British stage. Creative Director of Split Infinitive Theatre Company and workshop leader with Cast Theatre’s Script Works classes.
Rosie Nelson (they/them), a lecturer in Gender. Their PhD research explored Plurisexual Experiences of Sexual Identity, Gender Identity, and Romantic Relationships. Their other publications explore LGBT+ Health Inequality, Bisexual Visibility, Safety Among Plurisexuals, and Questioning/shifting identities. Rosie will be discussing visual presentation, cis-normativity and the gender binary.
Prommanee Sombattpiboon AKA Peach (she/her), DMU alumni and co-founder of Octagon Hotpot in York. She offers up personal insights into the life of a bisexual woman, recognising the complexity of gender and self-identity throughout the lifespan.
Places can be booked up to 1 hour before the start of the event. Registrants will receive a link to join the session 24 hours before the event.
